Ornstein update brings lengthy negotiations closer to conclusion
Ornstein reported that Liverpool and PSG held important talks earlier in the week as both sides attempted to establish whether an agreement was possible. Barcola’s desire to move to Merseyside helped provide clarity during those negotiations.
The 23-year-old has two years remaining on his PSG contract but has made it clear that he does not intend to sign an extension. His omission from the squad for PSG’s opening Ligue 1 fixture, a 2-2 draw against Rennes, offered another indication that his position in Paris had changed.
Liverpool had been preparing their approach since July, when Barcola emerged as their leading attacking target. His availability was never guaranteed, particularly given PSG’s financial strength and recent success, but the player’s contractual stance created an opportunity.
Even so, an agreement in principle should not be confused with a completed transfer. Payment terms, performance-related additions and other contractual matters may still require attention. Liverpool will also need to finalise personal terms and complete the usual medical and registration processes.

Barcola is most comfortable attacking from the left, where he can use his acceleration to isolate defenders and carry the ball into dangerous areas. He can also operate from the right, giving Liverpool flexibility across the front line.
That versatility is particularly valuable for a side seeking to play with greater speed and aggression. Barcola does not merely provide width. He can move inside, combine with a central striker and attack the space behind a defensive line.
His numbers at PSG demonstrate that he can contribute despite fierce competition. Barcola made 49 appearances during the 2025-26 campaign, recording 13 goals and seven assists as PSG retained the Ligue 1 title and continued their European success.
He faced competition from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Désiré Doué, which meant that several of his appearances during the latter stages of PSG’s Champions League campaign came from the bench.
