Despite the Cincinnati Bengals preseason kicking off against the Detroit Lions this week, it wasn’t the only news Joe Burrow found his name in.
Burrow was recently mentioned in Jayden Daniels’ statement regarding drama about the use of his jersey number.
The attorney for Daniels released a statement to LSU that it can no longer use his name, image, and likeness, according to a letter sent to Tigers athletic director Verge Ausberry.
“The Daniels family is deeply disappointed and feels profoundly disrespected by LSU’s decision to give Jayden’s number to another player,” the statement from Daniels’ spokesperson said. “Jayden and his family had every reason to believe that his number would remain a meaningful part of his LSU legacy and would be honored and protected in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to the university.”
Sophomore cornerback DJ Pickett is officially rocking number 5 this season, and this is the first time an LSU player has worn that jersey number since Daniels was drafted by the Commanders.
Daniels’ representative feels he is being treated differently than Joe Burrow because no one has worn number 9 since Burrow finished his career with LSU.
Burrow was asked after the preseason game what his thoughts were on the situation, and his response was quite simple:
“I don’t know too much about it. I just heard about it a couple of hours ago. I don’t necessarily have too many thoughts at this time. I just…I don’t know enough about the situation to have any thoughts, I would say.”
The Bengals franchise QB was also asked about his number not being used by LSU since leaving, and he stated that they told him they wouldn’t use it again.
“They told me that they wouldn’t use it again. But you never know what happens,” he said.
Daniels also released a statement regarding the controversy, so it will be interesting to see how this all plays out.
