One of the many ongoing transfer sagas this summer (seriously Liverpool, do something) is the potential departure of Curtis Jones to Inter Milan. The Reds set their stall out early, claiming that they wanted around £40 million for the Scouse midfielder.
Now there are reports out of Italy that Liverpool’s stance has softened, and they would now let the player go for as little as £30 million.
On one hand, Jones clearly wants to go. He does not seem happy at the club, nor that interested in fighting for his spot under the new manager.
However, given the current market for midfielders, £30 million feels almost insulting for a player of Jones’ caliber, even in the final year of his contract.
There is also the non-trivial matter of the summer transfer window, which will be slamming shut in just 17 days. Given Liverpool’s speed—or lack thereof—in getting deals over the line this summer and last, that does not feel anywhere close to being sufficient in order to get a replacement in.
It would also be yet another area of concern, since Liverpool also appear short in attack and defense, and playing for a manager whose intense style will likely come with a series of knocks. But hey, you do you Liverpool.
