The Chicago Cubs lost on Wednesday to their crosstown rival White Sox by a final score of 3-0. The Cubs were still able to take the series, but the offense went quiet for the finale.
Chicago’s infield situation is currently a bit murky. Shortstop Dansby Swanson landed on the 10-day injured list with a left oblique strain, prompting Nico Hoerner to shift over to shortstop with Pedro Ramirez handling duties at second base.

Still, Chicago could clearly use some additional depth at the position in the short term, so the club decided to make a move moments after Wednesday’s loss, claiming a player off waivers from the New York Mets.
“The Cubs claimed INF Gabriel Arias off waivers from the Mets. In a corresponding move, the Cubs transferred RHP Phil Maton to the 60-day injured list,” the club wrote on X.
Arias will likely come off the bench and offers another option for manager Craig Counsell in the infield. He also has the ability to play third base and first base, which could be valuable in giving days off to Alex Bregman and Michael Busch as the season winds down.
When Arias takes the field for Chicago it will mark his third organization in 2026. He played most of this year with the Cleveland Guardians before being designated for assignment and claimed by the Mets, who also designated him.
Across 44 games this year the 26-year-old utility infielder has posted a .244 batting average, .284 on-base percentage and .645 OPS. He is mostly known for his defensive abilities and should be a reliable depth option off the bench for a Cubs team with postseason aspirations.
