( I'm so sorry, Chicago Cubs fans .) Instead, the 27-year-old lefty is staying with the Los Angeles Angels , who currently have the worst record in baseball, at least through the end of the 2026 season.
Right now, you might be asking yourself: Why? What benefit was it to the Angels to keep someone like Detmers in a lost season when he could've been traded for a potentially rich return of prospects for the future?
Well, see, that was kind of the problem in itself.
Just look at what the Cubs reportedly almost traded for Detmers before the deal with the Angels was apparently nixed:
Infielder Jefferson Rojas (the Cubs’ No. 2 overall prospect)
Right-handed pitcher Dominick Reid (the Cubs’ No. 13 overall prospect)
Right-handed pitcher Mason McGwire (the Cubs' No. 18 overall prospect)
That's a pretty penny for a guy who's never even made a single All-Star team! Honestly, on paper, it's a much higher asking price than what the Dodgers eventually traded for reigning two-time AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal.
So, it should be no surprise to see that no other team would want to match what the Angels were asking for Detmers. For that matter, it might not be that big of a surprise to see the Angels simply holding onto Detmers for now. Barring arbitration, he is effectively under team control through 2028. If the Angels are deadset on eventually getting a big return for Detmers, then they have plenty of time to do so.
Who else did the Angels not deal during the MLB trade deadline?
Zach Neto, the team's 25-year-old shortstop, is also staying put for the time being.
