Per the festival, "Even for those who already admired the talents of Brooklyn's own Cameron Winter, both as a solo artist and as the front man of the band Geese, his performance at Carnegie Hall on Dec. 11, 2025, was a revelation. A stripped-down set in which he accompanied himself on a Steinway grand, the show cemented Winter's status as a one-of-a-kind cabaret art-pop balladeer, his soaring vibrato resonating throughout a theater known for its legendary acoustics. Oscar-winning filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson was there with a crew, including his 'Licorice Pizza' collaborator Benny Safdie, to capture this major star-is-born moment, and the result is a smashing cinematic concert, shot on 16mm and 35mm with a perfect mix of intimate images of Winter and of the cavernous space, keyed into the singer-songwriter's effortless combination of bravado and sensitivity, darkness and light." A 35mm film print will hit theaters this fall via a roadshow release from Criterion and Janus Films.
Of the film, NYFF Artistic Director Dennis Lim said, "A generational talent delivers a mesmerizing performance before a rapt audience in an iconic venue, and a filmmaker with a rare and instinctive feel for music captures it with the utmost sensitivity: Paul Thomas Anderson's document of Cameron Winter's Carnegie Hall triumph is, quite simply, a concert movie for the ages."
Winter is also featured in Jonathan Glazer's "Joy of Joys," an NYFF64 Spotlight selection making its world premiere at the festival.
While Anderson has recently eschewed festival berths for his films, the director has deep history with the New York Film Festival and Film at Lincoln Center. "Boogie Nights" was an NYFF35 Main Slate selection; "Punch-Drunk Love" was the NYFF40 Centerpiece selection; "Inherent Vice" world premiered as the NYFF52 Centerpiece selection; and Anderson's first music documentary, "Junun," world premiered at NYFF53. Last year, Film at Lincoln Center held the New York premiere of his six-time Academy Award–winning "One Battle After Another on 70mm," featuring the director and cast in attendance, and presented 70mm screenings of "Boogie Nights," "The Master," and "Inherent Vice" at the Walter Reade Theater.
