Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst wants Kraft's contract situation resolved, but he told reporters at training camp on Wednesday that it isn’t a done deal. Kraft is a critical player to lock down to keep building around quarterback Jordan Love.
"There's been discussions," Gutekunst said . "And certainly, I think it's for both us and him it's in the best interest to get something done. But these things take time."
Kraft, a former South Dakota State star, has a four-year rookie deal of $5.53 million with the fifth-year option around the corner. A former third-round pick, Kraft has merited a bigger contract with 113 receptions for 1,551 yards and 15 touchdowns in his first three seasons.
Gutekunst emphasized that Kraft is among the team’s priorities. Contract extensions on offense have included wide receivers Christian Watson and Jayden Reed thus far.
“We've been through a bunch of extensions this summer,r kind of knowing this was going to be the one right about now,” Gutekunst said. “We have a little bit of time because it's just not there yet, but I would expect hopefully that would get done. But you never know how that's going to go."
Spotrac projects Kraft for $15.5 million annually or a four-year, $62 million deal. It’s not unrealistic for Green Bay to pay what Kraft is looking for, but the Packers will have to weigh it against many other needs.
That said, having a reliable tight end is essential for Love’s success. If the Packers don’t extend Kraft, then the team may have to look elsewhere for a first-string tight end sooner than planned.
Luke Musgrave is the only other tight end on the roster who had substantial yards last year with 252 yards. Josh Whyle had similar yardage once with the Tennessee Titans in 2024, and Drake Dabney is a rookie.
