Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes opened up on his recovery from the torn ACL he suffered last December and what it means for preseason.
The Chiefs’ decade-long run of Playoff appearances and Super Bowl dominance came to an end last season, as the franchise went 6-11 and lost star QB Mahomes to a torn ACL in Week 15.
The Chiefs are eyeing a return to the top in the 2026-27 NFL season, and they need Mahomes to be at his best all season to ensure they are ready to compete.

Mahomes spoke to the media after training camp practice on Saturday, revealing his knee is solid enough for him to forget about it sometimes and that his return target is still Week 1 of the regular season, not preseason.
“I forget about it sometimes, I try to be smart. It’s about learning to play with what I got, we’re just going to keep pushing it so I can hopefully get that ok to go out there and play week 1.”
Mahomes has been a full participant in Chiefs training camp this summer, getting his knee back in the condition he needs it to be in for games in the upcoming season.
Preseason reps could be instrumental in helping Mahomes shake off any rust, but the risk of reinjury might be too grave for the Chiefs to risk anything in a meaningless game.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said that there’s a ‘ pretty good chance ‘ that Mahomes doesn’t play in the first game, with his status for later games unclear.

“I mean, there’s a pretty good chance where I don’t play him. [The] percentages are leading that way. I don’t know if I’ll play him in the second or third game. I don’t know that. The percentages probably lean against not doing that.”
The Chiefs’ first preseason game is against the LA Rams on August 15, with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on August 22, and then the Seattle Seahawks in their final preseason game on August 28.
Mahomes might want to see the field in one of these three games, but his priority will remain getting ready in time for Week 1 against the Denver Broncos on September 14.
