See the full story · 1 sourcesIowa State women's soccer coach Matt Fannon announced that he will retire from coaching after the 2026 season, his seventh with the Cyclones.
Fannon has been Iowa State's soccer coach since 2020. He informed the team of his decision on Thursday, July 30.
“After thorough consideration and deliberate discussions with my family, I’ve decided this will be my final season,” Fannon said in a university news release. “Coaching has been one of the greatest privileges of my life. I’m incredibly honored to have worked under a great administration here at ISU, and to have learned so much from (athletics director) Jamie (Pollard). I'm looking forward to spending more time with my family and embracing the next chapter. I’m grateful for everyone who’s been part of this journey, and I’m excited to make this final season one to remember.”
Fannon, a 2008 graduate of Davis and Elkins College, has a record of 24 wins, 56 losses and 20 ties in seven years at Iowa State. That includes a 9-39-9 mark in Big 12 Conference matches. The Cyclones were 4-9-4 in 2025.
His career record is 105-100-37 (Fannon previously coached at Wittenberg and Bowling Green).
An Oct. 26, 2022, Des Moines Register report outlined former players' accusations against Fannon that included verbal abuse, controlling behavior and body shaming. ISU officials declined comment for that story, but shortly after Fannon signed a contract extension on Nov. 7, 2022.
The contract runs through the 2026 season.
Iowa State is set to open its season on Aug. 12 when it travels to Omaha for a 7 p.m. contest.
