Arizona State transfer quarterback Sam Leavitt's foot has improved over the offseason, but he's still dealing with foot maintenance ahead of LSU's regular season.
Leavitt suffered a foot injury last season against Baylor on Sept. 20. He played through the injury before deciding to get season-ending surgery before the November part of the schedule.
After leading ASU to a Big 12 championship and College Football Playoff appearance in 2024, Leavitt was a prized commodity in the transfer portal this offseason. He chose to sign with new head coach Lane Kiffin at LSU.
Leavitt was limited during spring practices and had a follow-up procedure done in April.
Leavitt had positive news to share on his foot during training camp, but noted that he's still dealing with foot maintenance during warm-ups at practice.
"Just have to, honestly, warm it up a little bit before practice," Leavitt said , via Cody Nagel of CBS Sports. "But keeping my routine and everything at night, it's really zero thought process for me."
It remains to be seen how durable Leavitt will be when the regular season begins. If he has to warm up his foot before practices, it stands to reason he could suffer a setback if something happens to his foot during games.
For now, Leavitt believes he's "100 percent" before the regular season. Kiffin has noticed a chance in Leavitt's ability since the spring.
"I'm extremely pleased with his week and how he looks," Kiffin said. "We have high standards of how we want things and what we want them to look like, and it was probably unrealistic what I was expecting him to look like when he can't move and he was throwing without having his weight to be able to push into.
"Now that he's healthy, he's had a great week and we're really excited about him."
Leavitt threw for 2,885 yards, 24 touchdowns and six interceptions. His numbers took a hit in 2025 while he was dealing with the foot injury. He went 5-2 as a starter last season, throwing for 1,628 yards, 10 touchdowns and three interceptions.
Leavitt should be set up to have even more success with LSU than he had with ASU in 2024, his previous best season in college. The Tigers boosted their receiver corps this offseason by bringing in Jayce Brown, Jackson Harris, and Winston Watkins Jr. in the transfer portal.
