Draymond Green on fan reaction to Russell Westbrook retiring: Basketball fans suck. And by the way, I am a basketball fan, so you can throw me in that category, too. But basketball fans suck. Because for the last 8 to 10 years, all this guy has heard is how bad he sucks, how he don’t shoot it well, how he stat pad, and how he mess up teams. And when you’re in this game and that’s all you see, that’s all you hear, you power through it. You fight through it because that’s who we are. That’s what we do. But man, that sh*t is irritating and it bothers you. Make no mistake about it. Westbrick and all the things y’all said about him. And the moment he step aside, oh man, y’all did Russ wrong. Can’t tell me he couldn’t be on the team. What? How, wow how he played the game. Gonna miss him and not in the NBA. All these great beautiful things. Why can’t we feel that when you going?

Thunder Executive Vice President and General Manager Sam Presti: "Russell Westbrook is the ultimate competitor. His internal belief and unbridled fearlessness helped establish the foundation of our organization from day one in 2008 and he elevated the confidence and inspired our community in every year thereafter. Russell will be as successful in his life after basketball as he was during his career because his qualities and gifts transfer. His impact on our community is still felt today, and he is beloved for his devotion as much as his talent. He built a Hall of Fame career not by making statements or simply by breaking records, he did it by showing us all the power of asking one simple question: Why Not?” — 8/12/2026 NBA.com

Russell Westbrook is not known to be in advanced negotiations with Hapoel Tel Aviv. The report suggesting otherwise was a social media hoax. The false claim originated with an X account presenting itself as basketball reporter “Marc Jacobs.” The account asserted that Westbrook and Hapoel had mutual interest, that negotiations were progressing and that the former MVP was seriously considering playing overseas. It attributed the information to The Athletic, but no corresponding report from the outlet supported those claims. Journalist Philip Lewis subsequently identified the purported source as a parody account . — 8/12/2026 New York Post
