The 28-year-old safety has a reputation for trash talking and ruffling feathers, and on Wednesday, he seemed to draw the ire of his head coach, Joe Brady.
Gardner-Johnson was live streaming from the Bills locker room — something Bills players haven’t traditionally done given the value the franchise places on privacy. Brady was quick to intervene, warning Gardner-Johnson that type of behavior is something he doesn’t want to see.
“I’ll just say be mindful — probably not in the locker room, training room — you know what I mean?” Brady asked.
Gardner-Johnson seemed to take Brady’s message in stride, reacting in a non-combative manner.
“Alright, now I’m done, chat,” Grander-Johnson replied. “I’m gone, chat. Coach said it’s done. I’m gone for the day. Hey, I’ll catch y’all [later].”
After spending the first three seasons of his career with the New Orleans Saints, Gardner-Johnson has bounced around with the Philadelphia Eagles, Detroit Lions, the Eagles again, the Houston Texans, and the Chicago Bears.
He finished last season with 66 tackles and two interceptions, and he’s just one year removed from recording a career-high six interceptions and 12 passes defended. If he can avoid injury, Gardner-Johnson could be a key piece of Buffalo’s secondary.
Cole Bishop has one of the Bills’ starting safety spots locked down, and Gardner-Johnson will presumably compete with Geno Stone, Damar Hamlin, and Sam Franklin Jr. for the other spot.
