The Dallas Cowboys locked down a massive piece of their defense by signing their new stud defensive tackle to a three-year, $106 million extension, ensuring the team’s most disruptive force hangs around through the 2030 season. It was an uncharacteristically early move for a front office notorious for waiting things out, but taking action now is a big win for the organization as it helps them in a multitude of ways. Today, we’ll run down all the reasons this was a great move for the Cowboys.
Reason #1 – immediate cap relief, roster flexibility
Before the extension, Williams was carrying base salaries of $21.6 million and $25.5 million, respectively, over the next two seasons. With a new deal, the team now has immediate salary cap relief, freeing up roughly $35 million over the next two years. This immediate cap savings gives the front office the flexibility to keep the roster loaded with talent as they continue to maximize the window with Dak Prescott. This could mean a lot of different things. Maybe they take on another pricey salary as teased by the front office, indicating that they are looking to make another deal. Maybe it means they’ll have room to afford George Pickens down the road, or, at the very least, slap that second franchise tag on him until they work towards a final decision. Again, flexibility.
Reason #2 – cost control against a rising market
If you look around, defensive tackles around the league are getting paid, and paid handsomely. The Philadelphia Eagles gave Jordan Davis a three-year, $78 million deal in March, only to turn around and extend Jalen Carter to a four-year, $152 million deal last month. The Tennessee Titans gave Jeffrey Simmons a three-year, $106 million deal in June. Teams are recognizing the importance of a bona fide interior stud, and they don’t come cheap. Rather than waiting around while Williams still has time on his new deal, they opted to re-up now and lock him to the current market price.
Reason #3 – share the reward
The Cowboys get the 2026 price for a player who is now under team control for the next five years, meaning that relative costs will keep going down. While the team reaps those savings later, Williams is rewarded with a pay raise over his previous deal and more guaranteed money. It’s an early extension, but it’s one of those cases where both sides benefit.
Reason #4 – protecting their investment
Williams comes as one of the returns from the Micah Parsons trade. Giving up Parsons was incredibly difficult, but the team has secured a high-level player at a huge position of need for half a decade. There’s no longer any uncertainty about whether he’d be sticking around for the long haul. The Cowboys really wanted him, and after having him in the building for eight months, they want him even more. Regardless of how this trade is viewed down the road, the team has assured itself that they’re getting something good out of it.
Reason #5 – he’s a sure thing
Early or not, locking up a player to a big deal is a huge commitment. The Cowboys went from guaranteeing very little to a lot, which can be risky if things don’t pan out. But Williams doesn’t bring those concerns with him. He’s extremely talented, overpowering blockers with leverage, as he’s never a player who can be neutralized. He’s very durable, never missing more than three games in any season over his seven years in the league. And he comes with no drama. He’s a high-character player who never has any issues, meaning the team stands a great chance to max out their investment.
Reason #6 – perfect for the new coach
Christian Parker wasn’t a piece of the puzzle when Williams first arrived, but he has to be excited to have such a great player on his defense. The defense as a whole has undergone a massive overhaul, with the recent remodeling of the defensive tackle position being a big part of it. He not only gets a stud player, but he gets a guy gifted enough to offer the versatility that Parker requires out of his big men. He can line up at different spots, shut down the run game, and collapse the pocket from the inside out. Elite talent at defensive tackle is crucial for a Parker defense, so they win in the trenches with fewer guys.
Securing Williams for the long term is not only a nice way to preserve the future, but it also shows the team is ready to roll right now in doing what they can to give them a strong roster. Short-term cap relief and bigger savings over time are nice, but the Cowboys are showing they are indeed willing to invest in their big playmakers, even if it’s not always the players we think it is.
