FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Christian Gonzalez has impressed many of his teammates this summer with the way he has approached training camp as he also negotiates for a new and likely record-breaking contract extension.
That includes Kevin Byard.
The veteran safety was beyond happy to see the cornerback return to practice after being sidelined due to injury. But, has he noticed anything different about Gonzalez as the days go on with no new deal agreed upon yet?
"I don't see it. I think he's honestly handling it as best as I can imagine anybody in his situation is handling it," Byard explained. "But no, honestly, I've been seeing him be his normal self. We all know Gonzo is not the biggest talker; as we're having conversations, we're talking. But he's not like in the locker room, pouting or not being himself. So I think he's handling it very well."
Byard also made it clear that he will always be a sounding board for Gonzalez, wanting to support him and provide any advice when and if he needs it.
“If he wants to talk about it, I’m there for him to have conversations,” Byard said. “It’s kind of one of those deals where him and his representation and the team, they’re handling their way. I think he’s been handling it just as good as anybody could. Like, this is a life-changing situation for him. You know what I mean? I get it. It’s ball and all this other stuff, but it’s life-changing. So I can only imagine there’s probably some emotions and things like that, but I think he’s being a pro about it. He’s still being team first.”
“I just think for him, it just speaks to who he is and his character,” Byard said. ”Just the simple fact that he wants to be out there and practice and be with the team regardless if it goes down or not. I think that’s pretty just in my opinion. I think that’s pretty cool. It’s pretty neat.”
