Topline “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” the fourth installment starring Tom Holland as the young superhero, hit the $1 billion global gross mark on Tuesday to become the second-fastest film to ever hit the milestone.
“Spider-Man” has grossed $1 billion at the worldwide box office in only six days, multiple industry publications reported Tuesday morning, hitting the milestone just one day after “Avengers: Endgame” did so in a record-holding five days back in 2019.
“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has blown past expectations since its release Thursday, and has shattered box office records along the way.
The “Spider-Man” film now holds the record for the highest-grossing domestic opening weekend in box office history at $360 million (beating Endgame's 2019 record of $357.1 million), and the all-time domestic preview record with $74.5 million (topping Endgame's $60 million preview).
It's also the fastest film to ever surpass $400 million domestically in four days and delivered the highest-grossing Monday in history with $46 million (beating a “Black Panther” record).
How much more it earns. “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is expected to hit the $2 billion mark before the end of its theatrical release, which would put it in the elite company of only seven other movies to have done so: “Avatar,” “Avengers: Endgame,” “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Titanic,” “Ne Zha 2,” “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and “Avengers: Infinity War.”
"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" was expected to be a box office hit, but not quite at this scale. Marvel was coming off a string of underwhelming performances with "Captain America: Brave New World," "Thunderbolts" and "The Marvels," and projections put "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" at a roughly $189 million to $190 domestic opening which would have still been a huge success, but nowhere near what it ultimately did ($360 million). The Guardian suggested the film’s standout success means "Spider-Man" is immune to the much-talked-about "super hero slump. Holland isn't confirmed to be reprising his role for any more solo films or wider Avengers movies as of now, but rumors persist that he'll appear in "Avengers: Doomsday" later this year or "Avengers: Secret Wars" in 2027. Holland has discussed eventual plans for passing the character's torch to another actor and said he has a “ really clear vision ” for the end of his time as Spider-Man, but has also said he’ll play the character for as long as the studio wants him.
