Liverpool have moved quickly, and with good reason. A defensive crisis has a habit of wrecking plans before a season has properly begun, so the push to bring in Ronald Araujo on a season-long loan feels like a piece of sensible business rather than a gamble.
Andoni Iraola has a problem at the back. Joe Gomez is out after limping off in pre-season and is expected to miss around a month, which leaves him absent for the start of the campaign. Giovanni Leoni is still recovering from an ACL injury, Conor Bradley may yet be sidelined for a while, and the departure of Ibrahima Konate to Real Madrid has left a sizeable hole in the squad.
That is where Araujo comes in. The Barcelona defender has been lined up as the answer, a player capable of operating at centre-back and right-back, which matters when injuries are piling up and flexibility becomes priceless.

Araujo is 27 now, an age where a defender should understand the game and still have enough power to dominate it. Last season he made 24 La Liga appearances as Barcelona won the title, and over the course of his time at the club he has built up 213 first-team appearances and scored 14 goals since arriving from Boston River in January 2019.

Those numbers point to reliability, but his game tells the bigger story. He is renowned for his explosive physical power, recovery speed, and fierce competitive drive. He wins headers, attacks crosses, closes down danger and relishes the ugly side of defending. There is no fuss to him. He looks like the sort who enjoys the duel and sees clean sheets as personal business.
Liverpool defensive crisis demands a specialist
Plenty of centre-backs now are judged first on how they pass. Araujo offers something different. He is there to stop forwards, full stop. His distribution is simple, safe and practical, usually moving the ball short into midfield or back to the goalkeeper. In a side needing stability, that can be worth more than style.
There is also his versatility. If Iraola needs somebody to fill in at right-back and deal with a quick, awkward winger, Araujo can do that job too. In the current circumstances, that sort of adaptability carries real value.

Liverpool have already added Jeremy Jacquet this summer, but the 20-year-old is still being managed carefully as he works his way back from injury and has not yet played for the club. Expecting him to carry a burden straight away would be unfair.
Araujo, by contrast, arrives with pedigree, edge and know-how. He has also been part of Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay World Cup squad, even if he did not make an appearance as the side went out in the group stage.
For Liverpool, this feels straightforward. They need defenders who can defend, they need them now, and Araujo looks built for that responsibility.
