The school is giving one football season ticket holder a chance to help script the opening drive on offense for the Zips' home season opener against Robert Morris on Sept. 12 as part of a promotion announced Aug. 4.
Of course there's fine print, which reads, "With the head coach of course. This hasn’t been done before but we’re not crazy."
The promotion, called "Offensive Coordinator of the Game," will allow one randomly selected season ticket holder to work with Zips coach Joe Moorhead to design the plays for Akron 's opening possession.
Moorhead said the winning fan will receive a behind-the-scenes look at the team's game-planning process.
"I'm looking forward to collaborating with the season ticket holder who wins this contest," Moorhead said in a statement. "This will give our fans a behind-the-scenes experience that has never been done before anywhere, so I'm excited to show them how to put together the opening script and see what they can do."
If you’re curious, Akron hasn’t scored a first drive touchdown in its home opener since 2022 — a 30-23 overtime win against St. Francis (Pa.).
Needless to say, some are having fun with it on X.
"Major props to Akron, this is one of the coolest season ticket giveaways I've ever seen," one tweet read.
If you're curious, season tickets for Zips football begin at $75.
How to enter to become Akron football's play caller for a drive
Current Akron football season ticket holders are automatically entered into the drawing. Each season ticket counts as one entry, meaning fans with multiple season tickets receive additional entries.
Season ticket holders also can earn extra entries by referring new season ticket holders. Referrals can be made through the athletics ticket office or by including referral information when purchasing tickets.
The winner will be selected in a random drawing on Aug. 19 and will meet with Moorhead before the season opener to help script the team's opening drive.
