Ryan McKeague is the new head coach. He has been a varsity assistant coach and JV head coach.
Tresler cited a need to spend time with two of his children who are now enrolled at Kamehameha’s Kapalama campus.
“I’m still helping Kapaa. I can’t be there daily. I’ll be on Oahu a lot since my kids are attending school on Oahu,” Tresler said.
Kapaa hired Tresler in January 2020, just before the COVID-19 pandemic. In ’21, he led the Warriors to a Division II state championship with routs of Hawaii Prep and Kamehameha- Maui.
Kapaa moved up to Division I in ’22 and two years later won its second state title, blowing out Kailua and Damien as the third seed before edging top seed Konawaena 10-7 in the final.
Like Kapaa, Lahainaluna was one of the small-town football programs that grew into a powerhouse over the years. Both programs made the move from D-II to D-I.
“Although the news comes as a surprise, I have the utmost respect for the leadership, professionalism, and dedication Coach Tresler has consistently demonstrated,” Lahainaluna coach Dean Rickard said. “Mike has represented Kapaa with integrity, always carrying himself in a manner that reflects well on his school, his staff, and his athletes. His contributions to the Kapaa football program are significant, and his impact will be felt long after his tenure. Coach Tresler’s service to Kapaa High School and its football program deserves recognition and appreciation. I extend my best wishes to him as he moves forward into the next chapter of his journey.”
Vince Nihipali new head coach at Castle
There are few who could pull it off, and Vince Nihipali is one of them.
Just two days before the Castle Knights put on their helmets at practice, Nihipali was hired as interim head coach.
“It’s been kind of hectic. With any challenge, there’s a lot of work that is needed, but the kids have been very open to learning and very receptive to what I have been trying to install schematically and philosophically,” Nihipali said.
Familiarity with some of the coaching staff is a big help.
“The staff is hard-working. Their dedication and loyalty can’t be overstated. Everyone is working hard and trying to get better daily,” Nihipali said.
Nihipali’s first head coaching job was at Moanalua, guiding the program to the OIA Division I championship game. The team moved up to Open Division in 2022, but after one season in the highest classification, Nihipali resigned following a clash of philosophies with administration.
He was hired at Waianae in 2024. The Seariders were 5-1 when Nihipali stepped down, citing differences with some of the players’ parents.
“Having a supportive administration makes this a great place to be and makes coaching here positive. These young men are respectful, work hard and are awesome,” he said. “Win or lose, the program will give everything it has in everything we do. The kids and coaches are loyal to the soil.”
Mililani remains No. 1
The gap has closed, but Mililani is still No. 1 in the Star-Advertiser Football Top 10. The Trojans collected nine of 13 first-place votes after opening the nonconference schedule with a bye.
Mililani will host Nevada powerhouse Liberty on Friday at John Kauinana Stadium.
Kahuku jumped from No. 3 to No. 2 with a 20-12 win over Saint Louis. Kamehameha routed Farrington 65-0 and moved up a notch to No. 4. Kapolei had a bye — and has another bye this week — and moved up to No. 5.
Waipahu tip-toed above Saint Louis to the No. 5 spot after a 40-17 victory over the Campbell Sabers.
Punahou moved up to No. 7 after a 70-0 pummeling of Roosevelt in the unofficial “Paint Brush” bowl.
‘Iolani rules girls volleyball poll
Powered by Taimane Ainu‘u, Poema Kalama- Kingma and Georgie Lee, the Raiders of ‘Iolani are a robust No. 1 in the first Star-Advertiser Girls Volleyball Top 10 of the season.
Ainu‘u, a commit to Texas, has made the shift from outside hitter to setter with the graduation of All-State Player of the Year Bailey Nakanelua. Ainu‘u had a busy club season, winning a gold medal with the U19 national team and earning best setter honors at the NORCECA U19 American Cup.
‘Iolani’s Ann Kang Invitational is set for Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Next week, the Hawaii Invitational at Kamehameha begins on Thursday. Also on Thursday are the Pride of the East Side tournament at Le Jardin and the Lee Ann DeLima tournament at Kamehameha-Maui.
