The Red Sox agreed to terms on a trade for Baltimore Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman on Monday, according to Jared Carrabis .
The New York Post's Jon Heyman confirmed that the deal was close to being agreed upon, noting that conversations became serious during the morning of the trade deadline. MLB Network's Joel Sherman noted that the medical review would be the most important detail to get things done, which is why nothing was able to become official as of this story's publication.
Boston is leaving the deal in the hands of its medical staff, which will review scans on the veteran's left wrist after he was placed on the injured list three different times in 2026. Rutschman is making $7.5 million in arbitration this season and is controlled through 2027, with the former No. 1 pick set to turn 29 on Feb. 6.
Rutschman, 28, would immediately become the club's top catcher over Carlos Narvaez and Connor Wong, with the three-time All-Star returning close to form with a slash line of .251/.331/.433 being his best since 2023. The Red Sox haven't had someone hit double-digit home runs from behind the dish in back-to-back years since Jarrod Saltalamacchia in 2012 and 2013, which Rutschman did from 2022-2024.
Rutschman has been much better behind the dish, as well -- improving his caught stealing above average number (-2 to +5), caught stealing rate (24% to 37%), and total number of runners caught stealing (12 to 16) from 2025 to 2026.
It'll remain to be seen whether a deal will get done, but things are agreed upon contingent upon medicals.
