The latest addition? Forward Akane Shiga, who starred for Japan in the Milan-Cortina Olympics in February. The 25-year-old, who signed a two-year deal with PWHL Detroit on Monday, July 27 , had a goal and two assists for her native country last winter in her second Olympic appearance.
She joins a roster that features Team USA captain Hilary Knight as well as U.S. Olympians Cayla Barnes, Hannah Bilka and Britta Curl-Salemme, plus Canadian star defender Daryl Watts and Swiss goalie Andrea Brändli (the team’s top draft pick, who played in Sweden last season as well).

Shiga is no stranger to Little Caesars Arena, where PWHL Detroit will take the ice beginning in late November; she suited up for Ottawa in the first PWHL game at LCA (as part of the league’s “Takeover Tour”) on March 16, 2024, and logged 12:16 of ice time in a 2-1 (SO) loss to Boston that also featured a goal by Knight.
Shiga spent the past two seasons with Luleå HF in Sweden’s top league. She had 12 goals and 26 assists in 36 regular-season games, then added two goals and five assists in six playoff games. Before heading to Sweden, Shiga had two goals in 24 games with Ottawa in the PWHL’s first season. In Ottawa, Shiga was also teammates with current PWHL Detroit players Watts and Michigander Shiann Darkangelo.
PWHL Detroit is one of four expansion teams beginning play this fall, joining Hamilton, Las Vegas and San Jose in bringing the league to 12 teams. The PWHL is expected to begin its fourth season in late November or early December, after the World Championships are held in Denmark.
