Few events capture the history and complexity of aerospace like the Farnborough International Airshow. In 1908, Samuel Cody completed the first sustained powered flight in Britain at Farnborough. Today, Farnborough Airport primarily serves business aviation, but every two years it becomes one of the aerospace and defense industry’s most important meeting places.
The mood at Farnborough 2026 was upbeat. Commercial aerospace demand remained strong, defense spending was increasing, and companies were preparing for years of growth. By the end of the show, Boeing had announced airplane orders and commitments for 173 aircraft, surpassing Airbus with 154. Together, the two manufacturers recorded 327 agreements, up from 286 at Farnborough in 2024 but well below the totals announced during the industry’s largest order years. Yet beneath the optimism and order announcements, the industry’s central question was whether manufacturers and suppliers could convert rising demand into finished aircraft, weapons and other systems at the speed required.
SMBC Aviation Capital placed the show’s largest aircraft order, purchasing 100 single-aisle Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. The lessor also ordered 100 Airbus A320neo-family aircraft. Widebody demand was also evident. Riyadh Air committed to purchasing 28 additional Boeing 787 Dreamliners and confirmed six additional Airbus A350-1000s. Most notable for commercial orders was the mega engines order from IndiGo which signed a memorandum of understanding covering more than 1,000 CFM International LEAP-1A engines. Together, these commitments reinforced the strength of long-term demand while increasing pressure on OEMs and suppliers to raise production.
Commercial aviation supplied many of the show’s largest orders, but military aerospace shaped much of its broader agenda, with approximately half of Farnborough’s 1,600 exhibitors representing the defense sector. The wars involving Ukraine and Iran, growing demand for air and missile defense, and pressure on NATO members to raise spending added urgency to conversations about readiness and production capacity.
Several announcements illustrated this shift. Lockheed Martin introduced the PAC-3 Adapted Capability Effector, a lower-cost interceptor for the Patriot air and missile defense system, while MBDA unveiled a Counter Mass Interceptor designed to defend against large-scale attacks involving lower-cost drones and other munitions. Anduril and Archer Aviation unveiled Thunder, an autonomous attack rotorcraft designed to operate alongside current and next-generation crewed military aircraft. The hybrid-electric vertical-takeoff aircraft is intended to extend the range, payload and survivability of attack aviation while reducing the risk to human crews. Thunder’s unveiling reflected the growing role of autonomous systems and new defense technology companies at Farnborough.
The connection between national security and industrial execution extended beyond aircraft and weapons to the materials required to build them. On July 20, President Trump signed Executive Order 14415, which aimed at reducing U.S. defense contractors’ reliance on critical minerals, materials and components sourced from geopolitical adversaries. Beginning January 1, 2027, contractors seeking certain waivers from the U.S. government will need to identify noncompliant sources, demonstrate efforts to find alternatives and submit mitigation plans for removing those materials from their supply chains. The order directed the Department of War to develop requirements for mapping critical supply chains from raw materials through finished defense systems and to accelerate the qualification of domestic and allied sources.
The Executive Order underscored a broader lesson heard throughout Farnborough, which is that production readiness depends not only on final assembly capacity, but also on visibility and resilience across every tier of the supply chain.
Four years earlier, when the industry returned to Farnborough following the pandemic, conversations centered on labor challenges, parts shortages and working capital constraints. Those challenges have not disappeared, but the conversation has advanced. At Farnborough 2026, two words repeatedly defined the industry’s next phase: capacity and productivity. Capacity is one of the biggest unanswered questions. The discussion was about who would fund expansion in the supply chain’s most constrained areas. Aerospace needed more capacity in forgings, castings, transparencies, bearings, fasteners and other specialized products. A shortage of any one of these components could delay an entire production line.
Shortages in these areas are creating problems that are cascading across the supply chain. When one critical component is unavailable, companies often continue purchasing and producing the other parts needed for assembly.
