Ohio Representative Max Miller has firmly denied allegations of abuse made by his ex-wife and indicated he will still stand at November’s midterms.
" I've been portrayed as an abusive husband, an abusive father, and a violent man. Those allegations have damaged my reputation, caused enormous pain to my family, and most importantly, it's affected our daughter," he said in a Sunday livestream on X.
Later in the livestream, he said winning in November wasn't just about the Republican Party but also: "About my family and about our daughter and keeping our values here and holding the media and other individuals accountable who have been incredibly reckless."
Miller added: " I'm not getting out of this race, and I'm winning in November."
Newsweek reached out to Miller’s office for additional comment, as well as a legal representative for his ex-wife via email on Sunday.
The development comes as the two-term congressman faces mounting scrutiny over allegations made by his ex-wife, Emily Moreno, in an acrimonious legal dispute. Miller, who represents Ohio’s 7th Congressional District, has denied allegations that he abused Moreno or their young daughter. He has not been charged with a crime in connection with the claims.
The allegations have gained renewed attention in recent days after Moreno, the daughter of Republican Senator Bernie Moreno of Ohio, sought a restraining order aimed at preventing Miller from contacting her attorneys. In court filings reported by CBS News and other outlets, Moreno alleged that Miller had harassed and physically grabbed members of her legal team after court hearings in their ongoing custody dispute. Miller has denied wrongdoing, and he and his campaign have pointed to his continued joint custody of his daughter as evidence that the allegations are disputed in court.
The broader claims include allegations, contained in police reports and court records cited by multiple outlets, that Miller pushed Moreno against a wall, held a gun to her head and threw hot water at her. Moreno has also alleged that their daughter was injured while in Miller’s care. ABC News, citing records released in court filings, reported that child welfare officials did not substantiate allegations of child abuse and that Miller was not charged with a crime. Miller has denied abusing Moreno or their daughter.
Miller filed a defamation lawsuit against Moreno in May, alleging that she and her legal team had spread false claims that damaged his reputation and reelection prospects. The Associated Press (AP) reported that he is seeking damages and has accused Moreno of engaging in a campaign to portray him as "a violent and abusive husband and father." Moreno’s side has rejected Miller’s effort to frame the dispute that way.
The controversy has also begun to take on political significance. The AP reported that Democrats see an opening in a district Miller won two years ago with just over 51 percent of the vote, while some Democratic lawmakers have called for his resignation or an ethics investigation. Republican leaders have largely continued to stand by him, though the AP reported that President Donald Trump's advisers are monitoring the situation.
Miller, a former aide in Trump’s White House, first won election to Congress in 2022. He and Emily Moreno married that year and share a daughter.
