Garnder-Johnson, who played three games with the Texans before his release last September , was carted to the locker room after suffering a lower-body injury during training camp practice Saturday.
Bills head coach Joe Brady did not have an update on his status after practice.
Gardner-Johnson, who joined the Bills this offseason, went down during an 11-on-11 period after grabbing the lower part of his body. Trainers tried to help him test out the leg, but Gardner-Johnson could barely put any support on the injury.
He was helped off the field by athletic trainers and later placed on the cart after spending roughly 10 minutes in the medical tent outside the Bills' practice facility.
"We all know that injury is 100% in this league, but he's all right," Bills offensive tackle Dion Dawkins told reporters on site . "And I got the message from coaches that he's all right and they're going to do their protocol. He'll get ... whatever he has to get, and he'll be right back in the loop."
One of the biggest additions to the Texans ' team last offseason. Gardner-Johnson suffered what many feared to be a season-ending leg injury during Houston's practice dates at The Greenbrier in West Virginia. He was cleared after further evaluation, missing only training camp before being welcomed back into the starting lineup.
That lasted for three games due to poor play and overall scheme fit. Following his release in September, ESPN reported that tensions grew from the early stages of training camp between Gardner-Johnson and Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans.
Known for playing in the nickel, Gardner-Johnson felt as if the Texans were using him wrong in their scheme and he'd rather "rely on his own knowledge" than play in a different position. It was also reported that Gardner-Johnson had been "exhausting" by complaining about his role while talking about other players' contracts. The veteran denied the claim.
This offseason, after finding his footing with the Chicago Bears to close out last fall, Gardner-Johnson signed a one-year deal worth $6 million to join the Bills. He was projected to start at safety alongside third-year safety Cole Bishop.
The Texans open the season against Buffalo on Sept. 13.
