The fall of 2018 was a special one for the Boston Red Sox and their fan base, winning the World Series. Finishing with 108 wins, the Red Sox were one of the best teams in Major League Baseball all year and proved that when it mattered most.
In the postseason, the Red Sox went 11-3, beating the Los Angeles Dodgers and Houston Astros in five games, and the New York Yankees in four games.
While Boston got contributions from multiple players on the roster, others were better than they've ever been during the stretch. Right-hander Matt Barnes is the perfect example of that.
The veteran posted a 1.04 ERA in 8.2 innings, appearing in 10 games. Barnes never had an ERA better than 3.65 during the regular season.
An 11-year big leaguer, he played with Boston for nine seasons.
Over the weekend, he announced his retirement from Major League Baseball.
"When I look back at my baseball career, there isn't a single thing I would change," Barnes wrote. "I was able to live out not only my dream, but the dream of so many kids who pick up a baseball hoping one day they'll hear their name called. For that, I'll be forever grateful."
A former first-round pick of the 2011 MLB Draft, Barnes, a Connecticut native, appeared in 467 games and owned a career 4.21 ERA.
He was an All-Star during the 2021 campaign, striking out 84 hitters in 54.2 innings.
