NYPD officers shot a man and six people were taken to hospitals after an incident on the Lower East Side Sunday afternoon, according to police and fire officials.
The shooting happened at about 4 p.m. at 126 Ludlow St., police said. Officers arrived at the location and encountered a pool of blood, according to the NYPD. Police said officers gave the man multiple commands to stop and show his hands before he lunged at them with a large butcher’s knife. Officers then shot him, authorities said.
The FDNY said two people were taken to Bellevue Hospital and four members of service with minor injuries were taken to NewYork-Presbyterian. The FDNY did not provide additional information about the two people taken to Bellevue.
Police said officers subsequently found another person with lacerations to the head. The department did not immediately provide additional information about that person or say how the person was injured. It was not immediately clear whether that person was among the six people the FDNY said were taken to hospitals.
The NYPD has not provided information about the condition of the man officers shot.
Police advised people to avoid the area around Rivington and Ludlow streets because of police activity and warned of delays.
The NYPD said it plans to hold a news conference about the shooting later Sunday evening.
