However, despite suggestions that the player was receptive to the possibility of joining Arsenal, Real Madrid announced that Vinicius had signed a new contract on Thursday - less than 24 hours after a crucial meeting with club officials on Wednesday.
Vinicius' choice to extend his contract with Los Blancos will deeply frustrate Arsenal and their head coach, Mikel Arteta, who had viewed the 26-year-old as the quality of acquisition needed to elevate the club to the next tier.
