Barcelona set for tense Atletico Madrid meeting in Monaco after Laporta’s Julian Alvarez comments
Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are set to come face to face in Monaco for the Champions League draw, with tensions between the two clubs running high over the future of Julian Alvarez.
According to SPORT , the two Spanish giants will be represented just a day after Joan Laporta reaffirmed Barcelona’s interest in the Argentine forward, and Atletico responded with an emphatic rejection.
As per the outlet, Atletico president Enrique Cerezo and CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marín are expected to attend the event, while Barcelona will be represented by vice-president Rafa Yuste.
Officially, the occasion is about the Champions League draw . Unofficially, however, the ongoing Alvarez saga could make the meeting between the clubs considerably more uncomfortable.
Laporta’s comments meet fierce Atletico resistance
Laporta recently made Barcelona’s position clear , insisting that the club remain interested in signing Alvarez despite Atletico’s repeated attempts to close the door on a sale.
“We are still very interested in Julian Alvarez,” the Barcelona president said.

“We would like our offer to be accepted, and we are doing so with the utmost respect for Atletico de Madrid,” he revealed.
Barcelona are understood to have put forward an offer worth €100 million, but Atletico rejected the proposal without entering into negotiations.
The response from the Madrid club was even stronger than a routine transfer rejection.
Atletico placed the chances of selling Alvarez to Barcelona at 0%, while also presenting themselves as the injured party in the dispute and pointing to what they believe has been economic and social damage caused by the situation.
The transfer has consequently become a matter of principle as much as a question of money.

From Atletico’s perspective, there is little reason to negotiate under pressure.
Alvarez remains under contract until 2030 and has a €500 million release clause, giving the club complete control over his immediate future.
Barcelona’s €100 million offer may have shown the scale of their interest, but it has done nothing to change Atletico’s public position.
Barcelona clearly believe that their interest can still be converted into an agreement, while Atletico have responded by repeatedly insisting that the player is not for sale.
Neither side has shown signs of retreating, leaving the situation at a standstill and making the timing of the Monaco meeting particularly intriguing.
