Another outgoing loan to report on this morning — and this one is a bit of a surprise, but I think a pleasant one. According to Fabrizio Romano (sigh), Tottenham Hotspur are sending Brazilian fullback Souza to Porto on loan for the season.
This is something of a surprise, but maybe it shouldn’t be. Souza is the third choice left back at the club right now behind Destiny Udogie and Andy Robertson. He’s strictly a left back — we haven’t seen much inclination that he can or is willing to play on the right — and is a young kid that isn’t “oven ready” quite yet. Porto is an excellent choice for a loan — he should be able to get into contention for first team minutes even as a rotation option, and the Portuguese league should give him a proper challenge. This is a “dry loan” without a purchase option or obligation attached, meaning he’ll go back to Spurs next summer. If nothing else by the time he returns we should have a better idea of who Souza is and what he can become in the future.
This is a good loan and doesn’t leave Spurs particularly short-handed, so I’m all for it.
