After all, for a program who expects to be nationally relevant year after year, their barely .500 record was a failure in every regard. However, the great thing about a new season is a clean slate and Penn State could not have had a more rejuvenating offseason. With a lot of new faces coming in, the new look Nittany Lions are looking to make amends. That means more pressure...and potentially more wins.
While many believe the Nittany Lions could be much improved, questions about their win total are trickier. Some think they could get to 10 wins, while others think they could underachieve yet again. That's why some fans may be stunned to learn CBS Sports' optimism. On their list of 10 likely undefeated teams , Penn State come in seventh, even ahead of rivals Ohio State. Even the most loyal of fans will be skeptical. But how could fans not dream of the seemignly impossible with a schedule as favorable as Penn State's?
Brad Crawford writes in his article , "If Matt Campbell's transfer-heavy roster strategy pays off, Penn State could emerge as the Big Ten's biggest surprise simply because of its favorable schedule. The Nittany Lions avoid Ohio State , Indiana and Oregon and get USC after the Trojans face consecutive games against Oregon and Washington ".
With only three opponents on their schedule ranked in the top 25 in the preseason poll, Penn State could be in a good place before the schedule toughens. In fact, CBS SPorts sets out the perfect scenario for the Nittany Lions, saying that should the Nittany Lions be, "6-0 heading to Michigan at midseason, coming off a home win over USC", they could be in a great position.
While some might say that an immediate Penn State rejuvenation seems implausible, CBS Sports could be giving fans a sense of optimism again.
