More former Texas A&M players continue to land on initial 53‑man rosters as NFL teams finalize cuts, and one of the weekend’s most notable additions came out of Carolina. On Sunday, the Panthers officially released their roster, and former Aggie quarterback Haynes King made the team as QB3.
Some will say King earned his shot because of what he did at Georgia Tech rather than what he showed in College Station and that’s fair. But it’s also true that King earned his bachelor’s degree in business management from Texas A&M, meaning he’ll always be an Aggie with a diploma on the wall. That matters, and it’s worth stating plainly.
With that out of the way, King’s case for a roster spot was built on performance. He delivered a strong preseason despite a hamstring injury sidelining him late in camp. In the Hall of Fame Game against the Arizona Cardinals, the former ACC Offensive Player of the Year put together one of the most impressive debuts of any rookie quarterback this summer. He posted 219 total yards and three touchdowns, capped by a walk‑off touchdown run that immediately caught the attention of evaluators across the league.
In a league that struggles to field 32 true starting‑caliber quarterbacks, the backup spot has become one of the most important positions on any roster. Teams cannot afford to expose developmental passers with upside to the waiver wire, and King checks enough boxes. His athleticism, processing, mobility, and poise justify protecting him.
For now, he’s officially an NFL quarterback. And he’s officially an Aggie doing it.
