Argentina’s President, Javier Milei, has slammed outside forces for spreading an ‘anti-Argentina’ campaign during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 2026 World Cup has had its fair share of controversies, both on and off the field.
But the story of Lionel Messi’s potentially final World Cup has been clouded by outside political factors, with the country’s President slamming the anti-Argentina movements that sparked on social media over the course of the World Cup.
Javier Milei points the finger at Brazil, U.S. Democrats, and Mexico
In an interview with local Radio Mitre, Milei slammed the ‘anti-Argentina’ campaign at the 2026 World Cup, alleging that 25% of it had been funded by the Brazilian government, with U.S. Democrats and Mexico also playing a role.
“Who put the most money into this anti-Argentina campaign? The Brazilian government. Twenty-five percent of the funding came from the Brazilian government. And then they lecture me about interference.”
“(This campaign is) funded by Mexico, by the Democratic Party in the United States. Who are they? They are the progressive leaders who don’t want the ideas of freedom to succeed. (H/T AFP)”

Milei didn’t provide any evidence to indicate the validity of his claims, but he did say that Argentina received negative social media attention during the World Cup because of their status as allies of Israel and the incumbent United States government.
Most of the negative comments around Argentina at the World Cup came from their style of play and a pattern of referee biases, which led to official complaints being filed by certain FAs.
The fallout of the 2026 World Cup remains ugly, as there is no soccer to distract everyone from the political problems at the tournament.
Hopefully, this situation doesn’t escalate at a time when national confederations might need to unite to stop FIFA President Gianni Infantino from privatizing the sport and its future World Cups.
