Sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport that the team planned on bringing in Samuel on a one-year deal worth up to $7 million.
San Francisco is concerned about Ricky Pearsall's injury due to swelling of the posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. Team officials added that they were exploring all options, including surgery that would put Pearsall out for a few weeks.
Aside from the Pearsall injury, wideout Christian Kirk has also missed time during early camp due to a calf strain. The team wants to avoid any injuries, as last season they were decimated on the defensive side of the ball, and Brock Purdy spent some time out as well.
The 49ers drafted Deebo Samuel in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft, and he was a huge contributor to the team through 2025. For his career, Samuel has 219 carries for 1,218 yards and 21 touchdowns with 406 receptions for 5,519 yards and 27 scores.
Samuels provides another weapon opposite the newly acquired Mike Evans, but the team is also working out a group of young wide receivers to provide depth. Keeping them all on the field at once and healthy will be the main focus for the 49ers.
