One person was killed and multiple others were injured in a shooting at an unsanctioned party in unincorporated Morgan Hill on Saturday night, according to the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded at 10:16 p.m. to Hale Avenue near Miramonte Avenue following reports of intoxicated people in the roadway and someone throwing bottles at passing vehicles, according to the agency.
Upon arrival, deputies encountered a “chaotic scene” with more than 300 people fleeing the gathering after multiple shots were fired.
One victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Initially, the sheriff’s office said seven people in total were shot, but they later said six people in total were shot.
Detectives believe a handgun was used in the shooting, which they described as an isolated incident. The party was reportedly promoted through social media, sheriff’s officials stated.
The Morgan Hill Police Department, Gilroy Police Department, California Highway Patrol and San Jose Police Department assisted with the response, scene security, traffic control and the investigation.
Detectives are actively pursuing leads to identify the shooter or shooters in what is expected to be a lengthy and complex investigation.
