Rams' Myles Garret is Already Impacting Byron Young in Major Way
The Los Angeles Rams have now completed the first two practices of training camp, which have resulted in highlights from both the offense and the defense.
Following Monday's practice, outside linebacker Byron Young spoke to the media about a few different topics, with one being what he has learned from defensive end Myles Garrett .
“You know, just his mindset, you know, him talking in the meeting room and just watching him play in practice. You know it's it's amazing its a art, you know. Just love watching him play after one practice, you know, just if you seen him out there and his mindset on getting off the ball and winning reps, and you know just, you know, his point of view of everything it's different.
"So just picking his brain and just trying to learn from the best, you know, it's definitely thankful for having this opportunity, though for sure,” Young said at Monday's media availability following practice .
There is no question that Garrett is one of the best edge rushers in the game, and early in training camp, Young has been able to see the habits the future Hall of Famer uses to become that dominant force.
Over the course of Garrett's career, he has consistently progressed, which resulted in a stellar 2025 season with the Cleveland Browns, where he broke the single-season sack record with 23. He also had 60 tackles, 33 tackles for loss, three forced fumbles, one pass deflection, and 84 pressures.
Following Garrett's dominant 2025 season, he was dealt to the Rams in a trade that included Jared Verse.
The experience and wisdom displayed by Garrett throughout his career can now be imparted to players like Young.
Young has also had a solid start to his career and may very well benefit from the attention that Garrett will require. Last season, the linebacker tallied 82 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, 12 sacks, one forced fumble, and 64 pressures.
With Young heading into a contract year , the addition of Garrett may have come at the perfect time for him.
As Young told the media, the way Garrett prepares and is able to perform is like an art form and is a sight to watch. More than that, the opportunity to talk with and learn from the new Rams addition about what has worked for him is something that could massively benefit Young as he continues to progress.
The interesting part about Garrett is that he is an elite pass rusher, but also has the ability to play the run extremely well, which sets a great example for Young and the rest of the defensive line to be balanced and willing to dominate in both aspects of the game.
Focusing on just the pass rushing side, Garrett's nine years of NFL experience against a variety of offensive linemen is something that he can use to teach Young and the rest of this defensive line how to consistently get in the backfield.
The success Garrett has had as a pass rusher stems from his ability to bend the corner, which very few players can do the way he can, but also from his ability to set up his initial moves as well as his counters without giving them away before the snap.
With the presence of Garrett on the defensive line, it is very possible that Young will find himself in a lot more one-on-one situations on the other side, which could give him the opportunity to take the next step.
