The Athletics snapped a three-game losing streak as their beleaguered bullpen held off a late rally in a 4-3 win on Tuesday night. Gage Jump pitched six scoreless innings for the A’s while Brian Serven hit his first big-league homer since 2022 to give the Athletics a 3-0 lead in the seventh. Lawrence Butler added what turned out to be an important insurance run with an RBI double in the eighth.
Connor Wong connected for a two-run home run in the top of the ninth to get the Red Sox to within a run after Wilyer Abreu got Boston on the board with a run-scoring single in the eighth. Meanwhile, Mead will end up on the injured list after breaking his left wrist when he was hit by a pitch in his debut with the club after he was acquired from the Washington Nationals over the weekend to help bolster the offense.
Left-hander Jacob Lopez (5-4) takes the ball for the Athletics on Wednesday night, entering play with a 6.12 ERA and 1.670 WHIP in 64.2 innings, making 16 appearances and starting 13 games so far. Lefty Patrick Sandoval makes his fourth start for Boston since returning from Tommy John surgery, working to a 3.21 ERA and 1.643 WHIP in 14 innings.
