Now, the former UND standout is seeking a fifth year of eligibility.
Eaglestaff announced his plans to enter the transfer portal after one season at West Virginia via X on Aug. 8.
U.S. District Judge Charlotte Sweeney issued a preliminary injunction allowing college athletes from the Class of 2022 a fifth year of eligibility. The ruling comes on the heels of the NCAA's five-for-five eligibility rule.
The NCAA is appealing the injunction.
Eaglestaff, a Bismarck High School Class of 2022 graduate, is hoping the ruling applies to him. The NCAA, however, issued a clarification stating the injunction did not suspend the House Settlement or Division I transfer rules.
The clarification appears to mean that athletes who were not already in the transfer portal are restricted to playing for their previous school because they cannot bypass standard transfer portal windows.
West Virginia currently has 14 players listed on its roster, one player shy of the 15-player limit. Brenen Lorient, another Class of 2022 graduate who played for the Mountaineers last season, has already filed a complaint against the NCAA seeking a fifth season of eligibility. If granted, Lorient's additional season would put the program at its roster limit.
Eaglestaff averaged 9.8 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.4 assists through 35 games in his lone season at West Virginia. He played three seasons for the Fighting Hawks before that.
As a junior, Eaglestaff started all 33 games and averaged 18.9 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game. He became the first Hawk in the Division I era to eclipse 50 points when he scored 51 against South Dakota State that season.
Eaglestaff played for
the New York Knicks in the Las Vegas NBA Summer League after
his season at West Virginia ended. He averaged 1.5 points, two assists, 0.5 steals and 4.6 minutes per game in two appearances.
