Red Sox demote Greg Weissert to Triple-A, call up lefty as multi-inning bullpen option
BOSTON — Needing a fresh arm with the ability to pitch multiple innings after Thursday’s marathon win over the White Sox, the Red Sox demoted a reliever who has been with them all season before Friday’s game.
Boston optioned righty Greg Weissert to the WooSox and called up left-hander Raymond Burgos ahead of their series against the Athletics. Weissert, who leads the team in games pitched with 48, will head to the minors for the first time since 2024.
Weissert’s demotion was less about his performance and more about the Red Sox needing to call up an emergency multi-inning option after using all eight of their relievers to cover a combined 10 innings in their 12-11, 13-inning win over the White Sox on Thursday.
“After using the entire bullpen last night, you get in a spot where it’s imperative that we have an arm that’s got 90-100 pitches if you need it, because we’re thin obviously,” Tracy said. “Burgos fills that role.”
Weissert allowed a run and two hits while recording three strikeouts in relief of Ranger Suarez, who went just three innings Thursday. Weissert has had an up-and-down season, logging a 3.97 ERA in 45 ⅓ innings while allowing 13 of 29 inherited runners to score. He has allowed seven homers, recorded 44 strikeouts and walked 14 batters.
In his last 31 games dating back to May 7, Weissert has logged a 3.23 ERA and posted a 26-to-9 strikeout-to-walk rate while allowing just six of 15 inherited runners to score. That stretch, which included a spell in which he didn’t surrender a run in 12 of 13 outings, followed a rough start to the year in which Weissert had a 5.52 ERA in his first 17 games .
The recent improvements, though, couldn’t save Weissert’s roster spot as he was surpassed on the depth chart by Tyron Guerrero, Justin Slaten and newcomer Erik Miller and still had a minor league option remaining.
“I wouldn’t say that he’s the odd man out...,” Tracy said. “You get forced into things sometimes.”
The Red Sox informed Weissert of his demotion after Thursday’s win. It marked the first time he was optioned to the WooSox since July 2024.
“It’s not a conversation you want to have with anybody after a game like that,” Tracy said. “Sometimes, it’s just necessary.
“No matter the situation, when you call somebody in to have that conversation, they’re not thrilled with it. It was very similar to other ones. He shook hands when he left. He’s not thrilled with it, but that’s to be expected. You don’t expect anybody to be really happy about that.”
Burgos is a 27-year-old southpaw who has just one major league appearance under his belt, back in June 2024 with San Francisco. He began the year in the Mexican League before the Red Sox signed him to a minor league contract on May 7. He has spent the last three months in Worcester, where he has logged a 5.63 ERA and has struck out 52 batters in 64 innings over 15 games (14 starts).
Burgos last pitched Sunday for the WooSox in Norfolk, allowing one earned run in five innings. He threw 65 pitches and should be able to give the Red Sox a few innings out of the bullpen if needed. With Brayan Bello having thrown five innings over the last three games, Burgos will be Tracy’s long option behind lefty Payton Tolle on Friday against the A’s .
“Obviously, our bullpen is in a good spot, but when you use every single arm in the bullpen, a really good bullpen becomes a very thin bullpen,” Tracy said.
