See the full story · 2 sourcesFor the first time since training camp opened on Wednesday, fans were in attendance for Day 3 of camp for the Washington Commanders . The day began with some injury news, as head coach Dan Quinn revealed tight end John Bates was dealing with a strained hamstring and would miss "a couple of weeks."
But there was some good injury news: after missing only one practice with a sore foot, wide receiver Treylon Burks was back.
Quarterback Jayden Daniels had his best practice of the week so far, making multiple excellent throws. Daniels and Burks connected for an impressive conversion during third-down drills. Overall, though, it was another day where the defense held the upper hand.
So, which players stood out on Day 3? We look at four standouts from the third day of Washington's training camp.
RB Jeremy McNichols
Every day, it seems like a running back is making this list. Rachaad White is off to a fast start, and so is Jacory Croskey-Merritt. Jeremy McNichols, the 30-year-old, 10-year veteran, said, "Don't forget about me."

— Zach Selby (@ZachSelbyWC) August 1, 2026 The first year, 2024, no one expected McNichols to make the 53. He did. Throughout the season, he proved why he belonged. Every time he gets a chance to contribute on offense, he takes advantage. He excels on special teams and is invaluable in pass protection. It's just tough to see McNichols not making the final roster for the third consecutive season. He's just valuable.
TE Colson Yankoff
On Thursday, Yankoff had the highlight-reel play. With Bates out for a couple of weeks, there's an opportunity for Ben Sinnott, Yankoff and others. Sinnott made some plays, but he also had a drop or two. Yankoff continues to prove he can do more than just play special teams. A former college running back and wide receiver, Yankoff the perfect combination of size and athleticism. He quietly continues to make plays every day, doing so again on Saturday.
EDGEs Odafe Owen and K'Lavon Chaisson
There wasn't one specific play that stood out, but Washington's new starting edge rushers are just different. Odafe Oweh has been making plays all week. His size, speed, athleticism, and length are ridiculous. K'Lavon Chaisson is athletic, too, but he's also fundamentally sound and plays the run well. It's been fun seeing these guys go against the Commanders' offensive line. This duo will be Washington's best pair of edge rushers in a long time. And when you consider that the Commanders still have Dorance Armstrong, rookie Joshua Josephs and others, this is a position to be excited about.
K Jake Moody
It's been pretty even this week between Jake Moody and undrafted rookie Drew Stevens. But if we're going by stats only, Moody is a step ahead. Here's this from ESPN's John Keim:
The Commanders ran a drill simulating a late-game field goal attempt -- after running a play. The field goal unit had to sprint on the field and get in position for the kick. In this drill, incumbent Jake Moody made all three field goals while Drew Stevens made two, missing from 46 yards. Earlier, during another drill, Moody made all six of his field goal attempts while Stevens missed one.
It feels like Moody just needs not to slip up, and he'll win the job. Pushing him was a smart idea. Stevens is off to a strong start, too, but for the UDFA to win the job, he needs to make every kick, especially the routine ones. The preseason games could be the real test. Washington will want to see how Stevens performs in a live game. Another good day for Moody, who continues to stack these days.
