“I messed up,” LemonLime co-founder Jordan Zietz wrote on X Thursday, addressing backlash after his AI startup offered job interviews to people who got tattooed at a company party.
LemonLime is a San Francisco startup founded this year that says it builds AI agents to automate businesses’ busywork. It is part of the Summer 2026 cohort at Y Combinator, the influential startup accelerator .
The drama began on LinkedIn, where Zietz bragged that seven people had left a party at the LemonLime office with permanent tattoos.
“We hosted a YC Startup School afterparty at the LemonLime office to meet exceptional people, and find out which of them are just as crazy as we are,” wrote Zietz in a now-deleted LinkedIn post. “That’s why we brought an actual tattoo artist to our party and offered an instant interview to anyone who got a LemonLime tattoo.”
The post included a photo of a woman getting one of these tattoos.
“The job market cannot be this cooked that kids have to get permanent tattoos to get interviews,” wrote one X user.
Another wrote, “sf startups are now branding applicants like cattle.” The message included a screenshot from a separate LinkedIn post about the party, which featured a photo of a flyer that read, “Instant Interview for anyone who gets a tattoo.”

Another flyer said, “Top 3 most liked LinkedIn posts about LemonLime by 10pm come skydiving with the team.”
Zietz said in his apology tweet that the company has since deleted all posts about the tattoos.
“What I thought would be a fun, memorable way to meet people was, in reality, reckless, and instead came across as tying a permanent tattoo to job opportunity, which showed poor judgement,” wrote Zietz . “Even though participants chose their own tattoos and no one was asked to get our logo, I should have understood the pressure and power dynamic created by connecting tattoos to hiring.”
That explanation appears to conflict with his original post, which explicitly said the company was offering interviews for anyone who got a “LemonLime tattoo.”
Zietz said the company had spoken with everyone involved and is prepared to cover tattoo-removal costs for anyone experiencing “delayed regret.” He also claims that interviews were available to everyone, regardless of whether they got tattooed.
“I’m sorry to the people we put in that position, and to everyone who expected better from me. There’s no clever explanation here. I got carried away, and I was wrong,” wrote Zietz.
So far, the apology has not gone over well online, with many people accusing Zietz of using AI to write the post. Anduril founder Palmer Luckey jumped in to chastize Zietz for apologizing at all. "The critics will never be satisfied," Luckey wrote.
Others are still clowning on Zietz for failing to see the problem with the stunt in the first place.
