Nearly three decades after hip-hop icon Tupac Shakur was gunned down in Las Vegas, a jury has convicted Duane Davis of first-degree murder, bringing a long-awaited sense of closure to the musician’s oldest friends.
Shakur was shot in a drive-by near the Las Vegas Strip in September 1996 after attending a Mike Tyson boxing match. He died six days later at age 25.
For decades, no one was criminally charged in connection with the killing until authorities arrested Davis in 2023. Prosecutors did not accuse Davis of pulling the trigger but argued he orchestrated the shooting and provided the gun.
Much of the prosecution’s case relied on Davis’ own public statements, including interviews and a memoir detailing his involvement. While the defense argued Davis exaggerated his role to generate attention and sell books, the jury ultimately rejected that claim.
“I don’t know that I’ve ever seen a homicide solved this way where someone decides to go public in a book… and thereafter get charged,” said legal analyst Steven Clark.
The verdict resonated deeply in the Bay Area, where close friends remembered Shakur from his early years living in Marin City, long before he rose to global stardom.
Darrell Roary, a close friend who was in Las Vegas the night of the shooting and had planned to meet Shakur at a nightclub after the fight, recalled the immediate aftermath of the attack.
“One of my buddies tried to go to the hospital, of course they wouldn’t let him in but we were just waiting to see what we could do… it was just chaos,” Roary said.
Following the reading of the guilty verdict, friends expressed relief at the outcome while reflecting on the loss of the young artist.
“It’s one of the greatest tragedies of HipHop that Tupac was murdered and to see justice delivered is a beautiful thing,” said podcaster Adisa Banjoko, a close friend of Shakur. “It’s a great deal of closure for me because I knew him as a friend… observe him in some of his finest moments.”
Roary echoed those sentiments, noting the long path to accountability.
“Sometimes the wheels of justice moves slow and we just have to be patient sometime but the truth prevailed and here we are,” Roary said. “I would much rather him be here doing some good music and being the guy we grew to love.”
As Davis awaits sentencing, where he faces up to life in prison, those who knew Shakur best hope the focus remains on his legacy.
“Let’s remember the humanity of this young man… who died so prematurely,” Banjoko said.
