July 29 (UPI) -- Brazilian soccer sensation Neymar Jr. effectively confirmed he will no longer play in international matches.
Neymar made the announcement Tuesday after Santos beat Universidad Central in Santos, Brazil.
"I think my time with the national team has already passed," Neymar told reporters . "I made history there, and I'm very happy about it. I experienced a lot there, gave my blood and my life, and always fought and battled for the yellow jersey. But, I don't think I want it anymore."
Neymar, Brazil's all-time leading scorer, made his senior team debut in 2010. He went to the World Cup four times with the Brazilians, including their 2026 run to the Round of 16.
The 34-year-old Santos forward scored once and played for 55 minutes at the 2026 tournament. He also hinted earlier this month that his international career was nearing its end.
"I tried," Neymar said after Brazil's Round of 16 loss to Norway on July 5 in East Rutherford, N.J. "It started here at MetLife Stadium, and I finished it here. It is now over."
Santos (5-8-7) sits at No. 14 in the Brazilian Serie A rankings. The Fish will host Remo on Saturday in Santos.
