Week 1 is a big one for the Decatur County schools. North Decatur travels to South Decatur for the annual Bucket Game.
The Chargers have won nine straight in this series, including a 61-0 victory a year ago at North.
North Head Coach Steve Stirn is in his 12th season with the Chargers and are coming off an 8-3 season.
South has a new head coach in Aarik Gault. The Cougars were 3-6 a year ago. Three new teams are on South’s schedule in 2026 with Greensburg (Aug. 28), Paoli (Sept. 18) and Eastern Pekin (Oct. 16).
In Week 2, Greensburg Head Coach Isaac Sliger and his Pirates welcome a new team to the schedule. The Cougars of South Decatur make it back-to-back weeks of facing a school from Decatur County.
The Pirates were 4-8 last year in Sliger’s first season with Greensburg.
Also of note on Greensburg’s schedule this season will be a trip to Batesville Oct. 2 and a trip to Rushville Oct. 16 to wrap up the regular season. The Pirates defeated Batesville 31-30 and Rushville 36-16 last season.
A big game in Week 3 has the Chargers traveling to Milan. The Chargers defeated Milan during the regular season last year but fell to the Indians in the sectional championship game. This one will be well worth the price of admission.
The big game on Batesville’s schedule every year is the matchup with perennial power East Central. The Bulldogs travel to East Central Sept. 18. Batesville last defeated EC in the 2013 season.
The Trojans return to Class 4A after a pair of seasons in Class 5A. Look for the Trojans to be the preseason No. 1 team is 4A when the ranking come out next week.
The Bulldogs travel to county-rival Milan in Week 2 and to Rushville in Week 4.
New head coach James Eck and the Rushville Lions have four straight home games to open the season. Week 1 will be a tester as the Lions host Milan. The Lions get to take on Batesville (Sept. 11) and Greensburg (Oct. 16) at home this season.
New to the Lions’ schedule is Centerville. The Bulldogs have won 25 games in the last three season combined.
Side note:
One other thing to watch this season is the Mid-Indiana Football Conference. The conference is back with six teams: Brown County, Edinburgh, Milan, North Decatur, South Decatur and Switzerland County.
