The Buffalo Bills will be back on the field at Highmark Stadium Thursday night for their preseason finale against the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the field is going to be part of the story of the night.
It drew some sharp criticism from a few players following the preseason opener against Carolina because the footing wasn’t great and large divots were repeatedly torn up.
To some extent this was expected because the field was just laid into place last October and it needs time to settle, but it’s not something that is on the mind of head coach Joe Brady.
“I am way more concerned about the product that we're putting out on the field than the field conditions,” he said. “We've got enough things for us to kind of go through. I've felt it through the preseason, we're going through a new stadium, operations, field, team. We're figuring it all out so we have to make sure that the product on the field is where it needs to be and everybody else will take care of it.”
Josh Allen won’t be playing, nor will most of the front-line players on both sides, but regarding the field, Allen said he’s thrilled the Bills made the conversion from artificial turf and he can live with a little inconsistency in the surface.
“I think grass is healthier for our bodies,” he said. “I'm to a point in my career now that when we practice inside on the artificial (field), I can feel it the next day. I think any guy that was honest would tell you that's how they feel.
“I've gotten numerous burns on my legs from artificial turf, like to the point where I can't sleep at night because it's bubbling over. It's very painful. So I’m excited to not have to deal with that at home at least.”
