On Friday, Lucasfilm and Disney announced a home streaming release date for The Mandalorian and Grogu alongside the kickoff of D23 , confirming that we'll all be streaming this summer's Star Wars flick starting in September.
After a digital release in July and an upcoming 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray release , The Mandalorian and Grogu will finally come home to the masses on Sept. 2, when the film starts streaming on Disney Plus.
The Mandalorian and Grogu 's streaming release date arrives about 100 days after its theatrical debut. The Star Wars spinoff premiered in movie theaters on May 22, bringing in $345 million at the global box office. The movie's haul was considerably less than Star Wars' previous theatrical release, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker , which crossed the $1 billion mark back in 2020.
Critical response ranged from middling to mostly positive for Mando and Grogu's jump from TV to the big screen. In Polygon's review of The Mandalorian and Grogu , critic Jake Kleinman said that Jon Favreau's film "isn't a movie for long-time Star Wars fans; it's a desperate attempt to cultivate a new generation before it's too late."
"Baby Yoda was a once-in-a-generation character whose appeal has more to do with his visual design than the canon and lore that surrounds him (a tradition that dates back to the very beginning of Star Wars)," Kleinman said. "Jon Favreau understands this better than anyone. He's made a movie seemingly built around cute cutaways to Grogu and occasional references to something older Star Wars fans will recognize. The kids will go home happier than anyone still seething over the prequel trilogy.
"The fact that Favreau managed to do all that while also producing something that still feels like a movie at all actually feels like an incredible achievement. But the fact that The Mandalorian and Grogu fails to be 'a Star Wars Movie' means it probably never should have been made."
The Mandalorian and Grogu is available for purchase digitally on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango. A 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray release is scheduled for Aug. 25, with a SteelBook version and a "Beskar Collector's Edition" coming alongside standard Blu-ray and DVD releases.
