See the full story · 2 sourcesWe’re just one week into training camp, and the Washington Commanders are already beginning to answer many of the biggest questions that surrounded their roster entering the 2026 season.
Offensively, Washington entered camp confident its wide receiver and center depth could withstand the difficulties of a 17-game season. That confidence is already being tested, however, as projected starting center Nick Allegretti (calf) is missing valuable practice time with an early camp injury .
Practices under new offensive coordinator David Blough have seemingly breathed life into the team’s tight ends, and while injuries have created uncertainty up front, they’ve also opened opportunities elsewhere. John Bates is missing time due to an injury, though Ben Sinnott and Colson Yankoff each have had shining moments throughout the first few practices. With Sinnott and Yankoff both stepping up to the plate, the real question now centers on which guy proves themselves more valuable to Blough? Sinnott, a former second-round pick, is finally receiving meaningful opportunities. Instead of running away with the job, he’s locked in a legitimate competition with Colson Yankoff for a larger role in Blough’s offense.
Defensively, one of the biggest offseason questions centered on new coordinator Daronte Jones and what his defense would look like once practices began. Jones has quickly established an aggressive, attacking defensive identity, and his players are loving it. Odafe Oweh , Javon Kinlaw , Jeremy Reaves and Daron Payne are some who all shared great perspective on his teaching style and scheme. Jones has frequently moved the front seven into multiple alignments, creating unpredictability and forcing the offense to identify pressure and assignments differently on nearly every snap.
A major question headed into training camp was the depth of the cornerback room. Rasul Douglas was a signing at the start of camp and has quickly made his presence felt early with turnovers and pass breakups. Trey Amos, as of today, is still recovering from last season’s leg injury, and he’s scheduled to be reassessed on Thursday. Ahkello Witherspoon was placed on Washington’s reserve/retired list, prompting Washington to sign Fabian Moreau . Whether the group can hold up over a 17-game season remains unanswered, but ,Washington, to me, has at least turned what looked like a glaring weakness into a position that appears capable of competing.
