See the full story · 2 sourcesArizona Cardinals running back James Conner is able to practice at training camp, but so far, he has only done individual drills. He has not gotten any snaps in 11-on-11s.
Since he is not on PUP, he has been cleared to practice, but the Cardinals are taking it slow with him after he suffered a season-ending serious ankle injury last year in Week 3.
Conner is the one holding himself out of full practice reps so far, and the Cardinals are fine with that.
"James knows his body better than any of us, and we were hoping at this point we could get him out there, but he just needs a little bit more time," head coach Mike LaFleur said on Wednesday. "I do think (he will be a full go) in the near future, whatever that means to you. I do think we will see him out there, but he's still kind of working through to make sure that he feels as good as he should to get out there."
LaFleur said that Conner has "earned the right" to be in control of his return.
"He's played a lot of football. He doesn't have to learn the speed of the game, doesn't have to learn how people are going to be attacking the football like some of the younger guys do. So I'm not overly concerned by that and look forward to when he's able to get out there."
The Cardinals reported for camp a week before anyone else because they play in the Hall of Fame Game next week. The rest of the NFL just reported for training camp this week. I would expect he eases back into things after the Hall of Fame Game.
