Where Falcons wide receivers rank compared to the rest of the NFL
One of the biggest x-factors for the Atlanta Falcons this year will be how much their wide receiver room has improved compared to last season. In Drake London they have a legitimate top-10 star at the position, but the rest of the depth chart is relatively thin and at best unproven.
A new bunch of positional rankings from Bleacher Report illustrates the point pretty well. London came in at No. 10 on their list of the league's top wide receivers , at the bottom of the "Pro Bowl caliber" tier.
"Drake London is one of the league's better young wide receivers. He has never played with a top-shelf quarterback in the NFL during his career, yet he consistently puts up good numbers... He's the prototypical X-receiver, but he plays all over the formation, forcing advantageous matchups. London isn't in the elite tier of No. 1 receivers in the league, but with better quarterback play, he will enter the conversation."
Meanwhile, returning WR3 Olamide Zaccheaus came in at No. 72 in B/R's wide receiver rankings, as part of the "functional performer" tier.
"Olamide Zaccheaus excels on underneath/short passing routes where he attacks open spaces and gains yards after the catch. He has a compact frame with good football IQ post-snap to locate vulnerabilities within the defensive secondary. Zaccheus is a quality playmaker suited to be a good WR3 for an offense. He should benefit the Atlanta Falcons offense."
As for free agent pickup Jahan Dotson, he came in at No. 103 in the "replacement level" tier.
"Jahan Dotson is a quick mover with the route-running skill set to win against different coverages. He is best suited to attack defenses from the slot, where he has more room to work and eliminates the ability of corners to reroute him effectively in press coverage. Dotson can stop and start, beating defenders with double moves vertically and horizontally."
Rookie Zachariah Branch was unranked on the list, which stopped at 130.
Needless to say, the gap between London at No. 10 and Zaccheaus at No. 72 is pretty wide. The organization has to hope that Dotson, Branch or somebody else is able to shrink that gap quite a bit this coming season.
