The NFL is set to begin its 2026 season on September 9, 2026, with the first game between the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks. It will be a repeat of last year’s Super Bowl, where the Seahawks emerged victorious.
Ahead of the next season, the league has decided to scrap an important part of its history. One league official has already confirmed what this historical change will be, and how it will impact the sport.
NFL decides to remove Pro Bowl games
The NFL announced on August 26, 2026, during its owners’ meetings in Atlanta that it is eliminating the Pro Bowl Games entirely. The decision is effective with the 2026 season. This decision means that no AFC-NFC contest, flag-football matchup, or skills competitions will be staged anymore.

The league has conducted some form of the all-star event nearly every year since 1938 with the exclusion of 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The last traditional tackle Pro Bowl was held in 2022, and was later rebranded as the Pro Bowl Games in 2023 with flag football and skills events.
Instead, the league will select 88 players through the existing equal-weighted voting process involving fans, players, and coaches. It will cover offense, defense, and special teams across both conferences. More importantly, the practice of adding players when original selections withdrew due to injury, Super Bowl participation, or other reasons has been ended, as no alternates or replacement selections will be named. This change aims to restore exclusivity to the honor and legacy of the Pro Bowl for the players.
Selected players will be invited to an in-person celebration in Los Angeles during the traditional Pro Bowl weekend in February, coinciding with Super Bowl week.
NFL executive vice president Peter O’Reilly stated , “The Pro Bowl has always been about recognizing the players who distinguish themselves as the very best in the NFL. A Pro Bowl selection will return to its original purpose, honoring the best of the best. We want that distinction to carry even greater meaning for the players, their families, their clubs and our fans.” Another official further explained the decision to eliminate the games came from the players’ feedbacks.

NFL executive vice president of football operations Troy Vincent confirmed the decision to remove the Pro Bowl games and why it was taken. He said , “This direction came directly from our continued conversations with players and what they value most about the Pro Bowl.”
He added, “Being selected by your peers, coaches and fans as one of the very best at your position carries tremendous meaning. We heard clearly that the distinction matters, and our focus is on making the recognition that comes with it worthy of what these players accomplished on the field.”
The Pro Bowl games will be a thing of the past, with the NFL embarking on a new change.
