The Detroit Lions knew that their prized running back, Jahmyr Gibbs, would be the final domino to fall on the running back extension ladder.
First came Bijan Robinson, who signed a three-year, $66.75 million extension with the Atlanta Falcons. Then came Jonathan Taylor on the morning of Aug. 6, who signed a two-year, $44 million extension. And now on Thursday afternoon, the money finally comes to the Lions tailback.
"Last but hardly least: Three-time Pro-Bowl selection Jahmyr Gibbs and the Lions reached agreement today on a three-year, $67.5 million deal that could be worth up to $75.75 million and includes $51.5 million guaranteed, now making him the NFL ’s highest-paid running back, confirmed by his Athletes First agent Todd France (Toddfrance_ on IG)." ESPN's Adam Schefter posted on X.
Gibbs' $67.5 million supersedes Robinson's extension by $0.75 million in total base value and in total value with incentives. The small increase is evidently no accident: the former Alabama product was no doubt enthused about the opportunity to become the highest paid back in football, especially given that he takes the title away from the RB drafted just a few spots ahead of him in the 2023 NFL Draft in Bijan Robinson.
The 24-year old no doubt sees this as a way to prove the league wrong for choosing the Texas man over him, although both players have become bona fide stars at their respective teams.
And for the Lions, they lock down their most dynamic offensive weapon – alongside wideout Amon-Ra St. Brown – for the foreseeable future, and at a price far lower than the types of money being dished out to wide receivers.
