See the full story · 1 sourcesTraining camp for the Dallas Cowboys begins this week in Oxnard, California. The long journey to winning their sixth Lombardi Trophy and ending a 31-year drought will start with 90 players vying to rep Jerry Jones’ franchise.
Not everyone currently on the roster will be with the team for the entirety of camp, howevre, and some could see their time come to an end quickly. The Cowboys are notorious for adding veterans around this time of year, so no one should be surprised if the team brings in a player at a position of need in late July or early August.
In the last five summers, the Cowboys have brought in pass rushers Everson Griffen, Carl Lawson, Al-Quadin Muhammad, safety Malik Hooker, and linebacker Anthony Barr around training camp time. Last year it was James Houston signing in late July to give the pass rush a bump, which he did, finishing second on the team in sacks with 5.5.
The writing is usually on the wall and there are options Dallas could add in the next week or two that make sense. Here are four possible veterans the team might sign this summer.
Edge rusher Von Miller
The rumors are always around when Miller, a DeSoto, Texas native, is a free agent. A few weeks ago, it was Miller himself slapping a Cowboys jersey on a social media pic to spark the newest buzz.

— Bussin' With The Boys (@BussinWTB) July 8, 2026 From the Cowboys’ perspective, it makes sense. The defense needs more pass rush, and Miller can provide that in a designated pass rushing role. He’s older and not as effective as he used to be, but Miller did have nine sacks last season so he can still get after the quarterback. That brought his career total up to 138.5 and maybe counting.
It’s a marriage that fits, especially if the pass rush doesn’t look good early in training camp.
LBs Bobby Okereke, Bobby Wagner
One of the biggest weaknesses for the Cowboys is at LB, where they don’t have enough quality players. It’s at middle LB where the void looms largest; the defense doesn’t have a LB who excels against the run.
DeMarvion Overshown looks like he’s getting some of the early looks at MLB but if that experiment doesn’t work, look for the team to possibly explore finding a better option, allowing Overshown and newly acquired Dee Winters to do what they do best, run and hit.
Wagner and Okereke make the most sense as early down LB options, which would permit Overshown and Winters to play to their strengths.
The cost for Wagner might be a hurdle, but he’s the better option. Either way, don’t be surprised if the Cowboys add a LB sometime this summer.
OT Taylor Decker
There aren’t many holes on offense but finding a left tackle capable of starting games if Tyler Guyton isn’t the answer would be an ideal strategy. Decker isn’t as spry as he used to be, but he brings 140 career starts at LT with the Detroit Lions and is just one season removed from being a Pro Bowl player.
Last year it felt evident that Nathan Thomas wasn’t a good enough option and fourth-round pick Drew Shelton likely needs time to develop, so adding a veteran like Decker would be a good fit.
Expect the Cowboys to see what they’ve got in-house first, but no one should be surprised if the team brought in another tackle option on offense.
